  1. Rooting for Osamas in Pakistan

By Farrah 10 Aug ‘08 Help

Where the Indus flows into the sea lies Karachi, the world's second largest city after Bombay. Originally a sleepy fishing village, today it sprawls along the coast as a humid, organic, gritty metropolis of 12 million souls. To the east is the Indus delta, rich with mangrove swamps, and to the west are miles of deserted sandy beaches and golden cliffs stretching to the Iranian border. Nearby, a mystical Sufi shrine to the saint Mungo Pir houses an anomalous congregation of holy crocodiles.

Karachi has seen its fair share of trauma, so when I heard five rapid gunshots under a clear half moon this evening on my way to get some fabled Sindhi biryani I froze. "What was that?" I asked a nearby Pakistani. "Ah, firearms," he replied with a cheeky grin, "Maybe someone's been shot dead. Or...maybe it's just a wedding. Welcome to Pakistan!"

The best antidote to this dark dash of Karachi humour was obviously kebabs - and what mighty, succulent kebabs they were! Over mouthwatering grills and gorgeously fragrant rice we planned our strategy for Osama hunting. Here, we need to seek out our lovely targets with sensitivity. The last thing I want to do is prang a nerve and cause more misunderstanding. We're in the eye of the storm and must tread lightly.

  3. What a load of fufu!

By Farrah 08 Jul ‘08 Help

It's the end of our first day in Nigeria. I'm not feeling too happy about our Osama-hunting situation. Having spent a day getting here, we've spent our whole first day mired in masses of red tape and bureaucracy.

It's now dark in Abuja, Nigeria's capital. I'm negotiating the crumbling internet service provided here at a rate that feels circa 1991. Outside, crickets are chirping loudly what sounds eerily like "Find Osamas! Find Osamas!"

Now listen up - we really do need your help. If you know ANYONE who can help or who knows any Osamas, please get in touch.

  4. DAY ONE: COME TO DADDY, OSAMAS...

By Farrah 01 Jul ‘08 Help

It's 26 degrees and gorgeous sunshine is streaming through the windows here at Osama HQ in South London. On the way down here I got two tip-offs about an Osama in Putney and another one in Pakistan - cheers Charlotte! Also we've managed to track down a fantastic sounding Osama who has a passion for web design and mixes grime with Arabic beats in his spare time. I hope it works out - Masood and I are getting ready to jump on a train to Warwick early this arvo. The pressure is on, but hopefully by the end of today we'll have one delectable and fascinating Osama in the bag.

The UK leg of our challenge has begun, and we need YOUR help to gather as many Osamas as possible. Ask your friends, ask your colleagues, spread the word and spread the love. Osama HQ now has a Facebook group to help the search along - add him!
