Why is this project centred on such a potentially provocative name as Osama?
Osama is arguably one of the most well known Muslim names in the world today and it conjours up the most clichéd of images of Islamic culture. This project is all about transcending those clichés by seeking out 500 other Osamas and showcasing the rich diversity of their hopes, concerns, loves, beliefs and perspectives.
Why Osama Loves?
Loves is perhaps the last word you expect to hear beside the name Osama. This journey is all about surprising, exploring beyond the obvious, opening eyes and minds. It is a response to the current clichés epitomised by the name Osama – by gathering 500 Osamas of every age, shape and size, by showing the diversity of their lives and loves, those clichés will be shown up in all their hollowness.
Is this project trivialising the issues around Islam in the world today?
Far from it, Osama Loves is helping to put a substantial human face on Islam - based on first-hand experience - in place of misunderstanding, clichés and ignorance.
